The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi Counselling Centre (KCC), in collaboration with Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Ghana (WiSTEMGh), has made a remarkable contribution to celebrate World Menstrual Hygiene Day by donating sanitary pads to female pupils of Ayeduase Basic School in Kumasi. The team as part of the donation also took the opportunity to educate young girls about menstrual health.
During her address, Dr. (Mrs.) Mercy Badu, the Secretary of WiSTEMGh, emphasised the significance of the donation in promoting awareness and debunking misconceptions surrounding menstruation. She stressed the need to celebrate the World Menstrual Hygiene Day with young girls and empower them with knowledge about menstrual hygiene.
Mrs. Abigael Omowumi Emikpe, a member of WiSTEMGh and a lecturer at the School of Nursing, took the opportunity to guide the pupils on proper menstrual hygiene practices. She urged stakeholders, including educators and policymakers, to prioritise comprehensive sex education in schools. By equipping young girls with accurate information about their bodies and menstrual health, they can make informed choices and maintain their well-being.
Dr. Emikpe cautioned the students against relying solely on medications to alleviate menstrual pains. She highlighted the potential dangers of drug abuse that can arise from overdependence on pain relief medications. Instead, she encouraged the pupils to explore alternative methods such as regular exercise, gentle abdominal massages, and using hot water bottles to lessen discomfort during menstruation.
Senior Counsellor, Mrs. Bernice Serwaah Ofosuhene Peasah, imparted lessons on good manners and self-esteem on the pupils. Understanding the importance of cultivating a positive self-image and confidence, she emphasised the value of treating oneself and others with respect.
